Chris and Anna in Atelier Brighton open exhibition
We are delighted both Chris and Anna have work featured in the Atelier Brighton open exhibition, if you are Brighton way pop in (it's right by the sea so no excuses!) and it’s open every day from 11am-5pm until the 8th of September.

Anna is showing 2 works from the series Alpha cygni variables, which are a series of cyantotypes that are one outcome of an artist’s residency Anna took part in with Mayes Creative on the theme of ‘Starlight’, where she explored the star constellation Cygnus. This prompted her to investigate our relationship with swans, particularly in London, where it is nearly impossible to view the star constellation, but there are many opportunities to see real swans in the many parks.
The pieces end up with with a warm yellow tint behind the swan images are two layered cyanotypes, where the first layer is bleached with soda crystals, and a secondary layer of the blue cyanotype printed over the top.
Variable stars are stars whose brightness changes with time, as seen from earth, and Alpha cygni variables exhibit non-radial pulses. This idea links to the idea that they fluctuate, much like the cyanotype process, meaning each print is slightly different.

Chris’ work in this exhibition builds on his interest in how we are ‘sold’ lifestyles by influencers, property developers, journalists and estate agents, and how this is often at odds with the elements that really make places interesting, unique or enjoyable to live in. Chris studied in Brighton 24 years ago, and since graduating, he has lived in southeast London. But whenever he visits Brighton, these are some of the things that he enjoys seeing, and help him know he’s in Brighton, rather than anywhere else. They may not be conventionally beautiful, but they are characteristic, and this print aims to bring these together using a simplified colour of each element with screen printing.
